TSG Associates are the world's leading innovators in triage and mass casualty equipment

Having spent over 30 years providing equipment and training first responders worldwide, TSG Associates decided it was time to enhance their training with an online version.

Objectives:

TSG are proud of their instructor-led courses and it was imperative that the online content was led by the same knowledge and not just the technology.

  • It had to be under 2 hours long and, because of the nature of first response, it needed to allow students the ability to leave and pick up where they left off
  • The training needed to improve understanding and competency levels of first response to a multiple casualty incident through interactivity
  • An LMS was required that could distribute licenses in a hierarchical structure allowing managers and sub managers to distribute and see progress in real time
  • A means of proving competency for teams now and posthumously was imperative
  • The training content had to be engaging and informative and allow for variants between countries and between emergency service providers within countries
  • They required two purchasing options, one Pay as You Go and one on a subscription basis

We blended all this together to come up with SMART D-NET Online Training.

Our approach

We immersed ourselves in TSG and their training, taking a day out to experience TSG’s one to one First Response Training for ourselves.

We even had our presenter and head developer come along to ensure everyone involved with content delivery had the same clear idea of the task in hand. The traditional training is almost completely hands on. For the final assessment we were taken around a warehouse to perform primary triage on a number of dummy casualties. It was very effective and we left not only having acquired the skills of primary triage for multiple casualty incidents but also with a challenge…

To effectively transfer that knowledge and high level of interactivity and make it work on screen.

Keeping it hands on

To keep the hands on method we proposed the use of an on screen presenter who would react to decisions the user made. We also asked:

What are the most important things for a first responder to remember, to know and to practice?

This would give us the starting point for the interactive tests, activities and assessments.

The content

We had to get the tone exactly right so as to be friendly but to the point. Setting activities along the way meant the end user was constantly assessed and the training configured to change according to their results. We tested memory with kit and PPE sorting activities and knowledge with sequencing activities.

Getting the triage assessment process right was key to this training being successful. One challenge was fitting so much information on screen at the same time. First responders have to keep the casualty in sight at all times whilst triaging real world incidents and we needed to get all the tools they needed for triage online too. We overcame this with pull-in charts that could be accessed at any time and sliding information panels that moved into view during the assessment process.

Immersive Scenario

At the end of the training we created a virtual world that had fallen victim to a weather strike. The end user had 10 casualties with varying injuries to triage. We built a 3-step process using the pull in tabs, which mimics exactly what happens in reality. When the user reaches a casualty he must pull down the triage card and make an assessment. They must then remember to tag and count the casualties on the other pull-in tabs.

Dynamic Questions

Before the weather strike scenario the user must answer a series of T/F questions on everything learnt during the training. The scores from this and the triage scenario will make up their final overall score. The questions are dynamic to enable TSG to custom the questions for specific countries and clients.

Certificate

TSG set the pass mark and everyone who passes receives a personalised certificate via email. Should there be a failure that user is given one more chance on the same license to try again.

Managers of the users taking the training are informed of progress and results and can track this within the LMS.

The LMS

Once logged in a manager can do so much more than simply manage learning. They can buy additional licenses, re-assign unused licenses or re-assign a user to a new sub- manager.

Viewing results can be done on all levels and allows you to dig right down to individual scores.

Adding Managers and students couldn’t be simpler with our invitation system which is fully automated and can either be a straight forward as entering an email address.

The management hierarchy tool allows TSGs clients to create a company structure that mirrors their own.

Most importantly TSG are able to provide their clients with a tool to manage and prove competency within their organisations.

Don’t take our word for it…

What TSG had to say about us:

“TSG are involved in developing products that will actually help injured and ill people in pre-hospital environments. A lot of our products are focused on multiple casualty care and we also do very specific products that are designed for the rescue personnel to actually treat individuals and seriously ill personnel as well.”
“They had to buy into our culture; they had to really understand that there was a real reason for doing this training. There is a real serious need to give people the right skills and to make them competent and confident in this.”
“When someone buys into what we’re trying to do and they bring the enthusiasm back and you see the quality of work they’re producing as well that’s quite inspirational so what we managed to have was two companies that were really trying to do a good job and actually working towards a common goal. So I think we found the experience enthusiastic, we found it quite motivational to work along with them and I think that’s continuing as we see the finished product and as we work through other projects with them as well and I think very rewarding in what we’ve managed to produce.”
