About the course

There are multiple challenges facing the NHS, with an ageing population and people living with long-term conditions and disabilities. This along with growing pressure on health and social care budgets means we need to find another way.

To deliver high quality care that provides people with the best possible quality of life we need to re-think the relationship between people and the services that provide their care.

Person-centred care is about health and social care professionals working in collaboration with the people who use the services. Person-centred care supports people to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills they need to manage and make informed decisions about their own health and the health care options available to them. It is tailored to the needs of the individual and, most importantly, ensures that people are always treated with dignity, compassion and respect.  

This might all seem common sense but it's not yet standard practice. Health care often does 'to' or 'for' people rather than 'with' them. Healthcare institutions can find it hard to include people in decisions and commonly view goals as practical clinical outcomes only.

This course will provide an overview of person-centred care; explain the key principles, why it’s important and how it's been developed with some examples to help those considering putting person-centred care into practice. You will learn no two people are the same or have the same needs. As a health & social care worker, you need to provide care that is centred or focused on the individuals you are supporting.
