Worried about the memory of someone you know? Here are 7 things to look out for.

What is dementia?

Dementia is a group of symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and social abilities. It's a progressive condition that can be difficult to diagnose, especially in its early stages. However, there are some signs and symptoms that you can look out for that may indicate that someone has dementia.

Here are 7 things to look for:

  1. Memory loss: One of the most common symptoms of dementia is memory loss, especially short-term memory loss. People with dementia may forget recent conversations, appointments, or events. They may also repeat themselves or ask the same questions multiple times.
  2. Difficulty with familiar tasks: People with dementia may struggle with tasks that were once familiar to them, such as cooking a meal or getting dressed. They may also have difficulty following instructions or remembering how to do things.
  3. Problems with language: People with dementia may have difficulty finding the right words to express themselves. They may also have trouble understanding what others are saying or following conversations.
  4. Changes in mood or behaviour: People with dementia may experience changes in mood or behaviour, such as becoming irritable, anxious, or depressed. They may also withdraw from social situations or become more impulsive.
  5. Confusion and disorientation: People with dementia may become confused about where they are or what day it is. They may also have trouble recognizing familiar places or people.
  6. Difficulty with planning and problem-solving: People with dementia may have difficulty planning and organising tasks or solving problems. They may also have trouble making decisions or thinking abstractly.
  7. Poor judgement: People with dementia may have poor judgement or make unwise decisions, such as giving away money or falling for scams.

What to do about it?

If you notice any of these signs or symptoms in someone you know, it's important to encourage them to see a doctor. While there is no cure for dementia, early diagnosis and treatment can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. It's also important to offer support and understanding to people with dementia and their families, as the condition can be challenging for everyone involved.
