Working with TSG Associates
TSG Associates are the world’s leading innovators in triage and mass casualty equipment.
Having spent over 30 years providing equipment and training first responders worldwide, TSG Associates decided it was time to harness the power of the internet and enhance their training with an online version. TSG turned to Cloudtrainer to create the world’s first online multiple casualty incident triage training course.
TSG are proud of their instructor led courses and it was imperative that the online content was led by the same knowledge and not just the technology. Any training course needed to be under 2hrs long and, because of the nature of first response, it needed to allow students the ability to leave and pick up where they left off.
The training needed to be highly interactive, to allow paramedics to practice the triage skills being developed, and a means of proving competency (not just understanding) was imperative; literally a “life or death” requirement.
As well as setting high standards for the training itself, TSG needed an LMS that could distribute licenses in a hierarchal structure allowing managers and sub managers to distribute and see progress and results in real time of all teams immediately below them.
And as the triage packs TSG provide are in use all over the world, the training content had to be engaging and informative while allowing for variation between countries and between emergency service providers within countries.
Cloudtrainer blended all these requirements together to deliver the SMART D-NET Online Training system for TSG.
Here at Cloud Trainer we like to keep the skies clear from the start so we needed to fully understand the product. We immersed ourselves in TSG and their training; taking a day out to experience TSG’s one-to-one First Response Training for ourselves and making sure that everyone involved with content delivery had the same clear idea of the task in hand.
TSG’s traditional training is completely hands on and for the final assessment we were taken around a warehouse to perform primary triage on a number of dummy casualties. It was very effective and we left not only having acquired the skills of primary triage for multiple casualty incidents but also with a challenge. To effectively transfer that knowledge and high level of interactivity and make it work on screen.
Keeping it Hands On
To keep the feel of TSG’s hands on method we decided to use an on screen presenter who would react to decisions the user made and effectively replicate the classroom experience. We also worked with TSG to establish the most important things for a first responder to remember, to know and to practice; giving us a starting point for the interactive tests, activities and assessments.
There was a lot of essential training material to get through in the course and we had to get the tone exactly right so as to be friendly but to the point. Setting activities along the way meant the end-user was constantly assessed and the training configured to change according to their results. We tested memory with sorting activities and knowledge with sequencing activities, which tested the personnel’s knowledge base prior to training.
Getting the triage assessment process right was key to this training being successful. One challenge was fitting so much information on screen at the same time. First responders also have to keep the casualty in sight at all times whilst triaging and we needed to get all the tools they needed for triage in there too. We overcame this with pull in charts that could be accessed at any time and sliding information panels that moved in during assessment.
At the end of the training we created an immersive virtual world that had fallen victim to a weather strike. The trainee had 10 casualties with varying injuries to triage which were randomised to ensure that the test measured the individual’s understanding effectively. We built a 3-step process using the pull in tabs, which mimics exactly what happens in reality giving the trainees a realistic, interactive way to prove competency and understanding. Dynamic questions, that alter for each trainee, completed the assessment testing overall knowledge and understanding.
Everyone who successfully completes the training receives a personalised certificate via email with a “free” retake provided allowing those users that do fail to try again. Managers of the users taking the training are informed of progress and results and can track this within the Management Site giving them an instant, real-time view of progress.
The Management Site Once logged in a manager can do so much more than simply manage learning. They can buy additional licenses, re-assign unused licenses or re-assign a user to a new sub- manager. Viewing results can be done on all levels and allows you to dig right down to individual scores.
Adding Managers and students couldn’t be simpler with our invitation system which is fully automated and allows for the straight-forward addition of new students. The management hierarchy tool allows TSGs clients to create a company structure that mirrors their own. Most importantly, through these tracking tools and the training TSG are able to provide their clients with a tool to manage and prove competency within their organisations.
What TSG think…
TSG are involved in developing products that will actually help injured and ill people in pre hospital environments.
A lot of our products are focused on multiple casualty care and we also do very specific products that are designed for the rescue personnel to actually treat individuals and seriously ill personnel as well.
Basically we wanted Cloudtrainer to firstly supply the right skills for the role that we needed. We needed to make sure they could actually do the job and I think if you see the finished product that they’ve done for us that really answers itself. They’ve definitely got the skill base that we needed.
The second thing we needed is that they had to buy into our culture; they had to really understand that there was a real reason for doing this training. There is a real serious need to give people the right skills and to make them competent and confident in this.
So Cloudtrainer had to really buy into this and really work quite closely with us to make sure the detail was right but they also got our passion for the subject across in their work as well because that’s hugely important because this is a real life skill that we’re teaching so they had to have the right skill base, the actual technical ability to do it, without question they’ve got that but the more difficult thing was could they buy into our culture and could they really take our enthusiasm and put that through how they did the training and I think without question when you see the finished product they’ve done that as well. So that was the brief, two main points and i think they’ve achieved them absolutely 100%.
What was the experience like….motivational I think, because when someone buys into what we’re trying to do and they bring the enthusiasm back and you see the quality of work they’re producing as well that’s quite inspirational so what we managed to have was two companies that were really trying to do a good job and actually working towards a common goal. So I think we found the experience enthusiastic, we found it quite motivational to work along with them and I think that’s continuing as we see the finished product and as we work through other projects with them as well and I think very rewarding in what we’ve managed to produce.
